Older members will be sad to learn of the passing of Bernard Wells a few days short of his 91st birthday.

Bernard was a stalwart member of the club fulfilling many different roles. He not only served as club secretary (and also that of the County AAA) but also as Trophy Steward for more than a decade. An obsessive runner over the country and on the road (including the London Marathon) he was for many years a meticulous organiser of the club's cross country and road promotions.

Saturday 16th May saw our first Southern Athletics League (SAL) match of the season at Milton Keynes.
A closely fought match saw Milton Keynes come out on top with Bedford fairly close behind.

Overall Team Results were:

1  Marshall Milton Keynes    265 points
2  Bedford & County            214 points
3  Biggleswade                     175 points
4 Northampton                     145 points
5 Vale of Aylesbury               42 points

Wednesday 6th May saw the first match in the Eastern Masters League at Milton Keynes.
Bedford's Men were seeking to retain their title which they won last September at Thurrock, beating local rivals Marshall Milton Keynes AC into 2nd place.
Bedford's Women were seeking to qualify for the Final again as they did last year for the first time in over 20 years.
There are 16 teams in the League spread across East Anglia with 5 teams in Bedford's West Division.

We had great success in the U14G Discus at the Bedfordshire County Championships, held on the 9th and 10th May. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were all from Beds and County, well done to Olive, Layla and Malia for their outstanding performances.

Olive also won the shot and javelin, taking her gold medal total up to 3, after her huge 4m PB for discus of 24.46m.

Oriana Johnson extended her W60 hammer record on a cold evening at the EMAC opener. Her third-round throw flew out to 21.43m with the 3kg implement which marks an improvement of more than four metres on her 2025 best, underlining a significant step forward early in the season.

With the advent of the new Age Groups from 1st April 2026, it will be necessary to revisit club records for the new age groups.

Records will be held in U14/U16/U18/U20, Club and Masters categories, whilst existing records in the U13/U15/U17 and U20 categories will be archived and preserved for posterity.

The Records Group has been working to transfer past performances into the new age groups for record purposes, but this will take some time and depends on how soon Power of Ten publishes past performances into all-time rankings in new age groups. The group will use PoT as well as a number of other sources of information.

Where there are new events or radically changed events, the group will put mechanisms in place to establish the new records.

April 2026

A mix of new and seasoned junior athletes made the journey to Basildon for the first EYAL match of the season. This was the first league match where the new age groups were used. Apart from a few issues with the organisation of the match and finishing 1hour 15 minutes late everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We came away with a total of 105 PBs, 60 for the girls and 45 for the boys. Match 1's score currently leaves us 5th in the league.
