The third fixture of the 2022 Eastern Masters League took place on Wednesday 22nd June at the University Track in Cambridge. On what turned out to be a fantastic night for athletics (‘Oldies’ like a calm and sunny evening), the Bedford & County Masters Men’s Team managed a match winning performance, securing victory over Milton Keynes by 114.5 points to 114.0 points.
The match started with the 2 kilometre walk, which Adam Hills took with his now usual strong pace, and he was well supported by the ever youthful John Borgas, and the match continued as a closely contested event throughout the evening.
Strong performances saw victories for Pete Benedickter (100m), Tenny James (400m), Ewan Wilson (1500m), James Danobrega (Hammer), Phil Bowers (M 50 High Jump), Richard Phelan (M60 High Jump). All other athletes performed well, with no one finishing lower than fourth, except the Team Manager who finished 5th in the M50 Hammer, but those points gained there were sufficient in the end for confirmation of the victory.
Many athletes competed out of their age groups and special mention must be made to both Peter Webster, who never says no when asked to cover an event, and to Dave Folgate - I don’t know how his knees still holdup to do the triple jump.
