Sunday 6th June saw Bedford & county’s senior athletes return to league competition for the first time since august 2019, in the first round of the newly created National athletics league. Following last years cancellation and numerous format changes made in the last few months, the usual feeling of pre match trepidation was replaced with one of relief that things are slowly returning to a sense of normality.
Though it was obvious that most clubs were not at full strength and there were unfilled places in many events, that didn’t detract from the number promising performances across the board . There wasn’t the usual managerial stress in terms of match positions and cajoling to cover cover any gaps through the afternoon, the major focus was on athlete performance and the opportunities they were taking to compete, for many it was their first meaningful competition in 18 months. Most athletes came away very happy with their performances and bow have something to build in the coming weeks and months.
