Bedford & County’s Men’s Track & Field team battled to a creditable sixth place finish in Saturday’s British Athletics League match in Yeovil.

Bedford travlled with a depleted team for the Division 3 fixture but despite the small numbers the squad stepped up and filled the events with most athletes competing in multiple events.

Frankie Johnson and Javier Ferrer Ferrando delivered maximum points in the Pole Vault winninng the A and B string respectively, while there were second place finishes for Chris Thornley in the B 800m, Peter Carpenter in the B Hammer and Matt Nicholson in the B Triple Jump.

In addition the team came away with several PB’s, Jean Mozobo backed up his third place finishes in the Long Jump and Triple Jump with a PB in the 100m with 11.54, Under 20 athlete Jamie Webster finished strongly to claim a 400m PB of 51.87.

Team manager Craig Emmerson also picked up a trio of personal best’s starting with the 400m Hurdles before he knocked 12 seconds off his 3000m Steeplechase time, running 10:09, he then concluded the day with another best over the 1500m.

Tom Powell was another to rewrite his personal records with a PB over the 100m Hurdles, while the club’s new higher claim athlete Peter Keefe followed up his strong showing in his main event, Discus, with a PB in the shot putt.

Under 20 athlete Cameron Gillies also competed admirably on his BAL debut, running a PB of 16:31 for the 5000m on a boiling hot day.

The result leaves Bedford in sixth position going into the final fixture in Basingstoke on August 3 where a strong showing will be needed to secure their place in the league for another season.
