The wheelchair racing section was established in October 2018 when confirmation of a grant of £10,000 from the Eileen Alexander Legacy Fund was received. This enabled the purchase of 3 racing chairs and other training equipment. More recently it has received £550 from England Athletics to enable it to be set up as a satellite section of Bedford and County AC, and a further £550 from The proceeds of a local Rotary Clubs event, ‘A Celebration of Disability Sport’ held in May 2019.
Two qualified coaches, Zoe Luscombe and Michael Blunt from Biggleswade A.C. have joined the section and undertake the coaching, whilst from a starting point of one athlete the section now has 5 athletes training. Wheelchair racing is an intensive operation and much time is spent on setting up the chairs for individual athletes. The section needs more coaches – the section will pay for anybody interested to get the right qualifications – as well as general helpers. Please contact
Successes to date include:
Varun Bandi – 3rd in his age group at the London mini marathon in April 2019
Hugo Cracknell – reduced his 100m PB from 34 secs to 27 secs in his first race.
