Peter Kot Trophy

Club Person of the Year

Pete Dancer

World Paralympic Javelin Champion, Marcio Fernandes was the star guest at Bedford & County’s Annual Track & Field Awards held at the University of Bedford’s Theatre last week. Marcio, a club member since 2012, told an audience of 200, how losing his leg in a traffic accident when he was 10 changed his life. “Trying to play in defence for the school football team was not working out, so with a group of friends, I went to the athletics track and found that I could throw a decent distance with the javelin. That became my event and I have since been in two Olympic finals, set an All Africa record and won a World Championships which I shall defend in London next summer.”

Matt Bergin won the Club Best Performance Trophy for his 3000m time of 7 min 58.63 sec., which ranked him 11th in the UK; whilst top ranked UK under 17 Pole Vaulter, Frankie Johnson deservedly won three awards.

Phil Odell, a leading middle and long distance coach, was presented with the prestigious Services to the British Milers Club Award.

Peter Dancer was the very popular winner of the Peter Kot Trophy as Club Person of the Year. Peter, a stalwart of the club for more than forty years, both as an athlete and a coach, died earlier this year after a long battle with cancer
